New Delhi, October 5, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey has cautioned investors and traders against relying on anonymous tips circulated by financial influencers, or “finfluencers”, and claims promising unrealistic returns as India’s capital markets continue to expand.

Speaking at the launch of SEBI’s Project Jagruk at Panjab University, Pandey said the country’s capital market ecosystem has become deeper, broader and more accessible over the past decade, with a growing number of households directing their savings towards securities market instruments.

He highlighted systematic investment plans (SIPs) as one of the simplest avenues for retail investors and said SEBI had taken several measures to widen participation, including rationalising mutual fund categories, capping costs and enabling smaller-ticket SIPs.

India’s market capitalisation has risen nearly fourfold to around Rs 472 lakh crore over the past decade, while assets held by foreign portfolio investors have increased from Rs 22 lakh crore to Rs 78 lakh crore, Pandey said.

He also pointed to reforms aimed at making the market more accessible to domestic and overseas participants. A simplified FPI framework has streamlined digital onboarding, while SME IPO platforms have expanded access to capital markets. The IPO listing timeline has also been reduced from T+6 to T+3 working days.

Pandey said the market has also evolved through products and institutions such as investment advisers, ESG rating providers, REITs, InvITs and commodity derivatives. In the debt segment, online bond platforms, along with green, sustainable and municipal bonds, have opened additional avenues for raising and deploying capital.

On market infrastructure, he highlighted India’s early adoption of T+1 settlement and interoperability between clearing corporations. SEBI has also strengthened cybersecurity reporting requirements amid rising digitisation and participation.

Pandey said the regulatory framework has evolved from primarily supporting domestic investment to potentially positioning India as a base for global fund management activity.
