India head coach Gautam Gambhir has praised Shubman Gill’s development as captain, describing his evolution into a “bowlers’ captain” as the most impressive aspect of his leadership. Gambhir also said Gill has earned considerable respect in the dressing room through his performances and approach to the game.
Gambhir’s remarks came after India completed a historic 406-run chase against the West Indies in Guwahati, securing an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. India became only the second team in ODI history to successfully chase a target of more than 400 runs, with Gill leading the effort through an unbeaten 223.
The innings also saw Gill register the fastest double century in men’s ODI cricket, reaching the milestone in 117 balls.
“I’m not going to talk about his records because records are meant to be broken. But I think the responsibility that he’s taken is impressive. A lot of times, we feel that once you become captain in two formats, you don’t want your performance to go down. But his performance has only gone up since he took over as captain in England,” Gambhir said on JioStar.

He said Gill’s growth has been evident in both white-ball and red-ball cricket, adding that the young captain commands respect from his teammates.
“The most impressive thing that I think of him is that he’s becoming a bowlers’ captain. He knows how difficult it is for the bowlers in this format, and once you do that, you will always earn that respect in the dressing room,” Gambhir said.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar also praised Gill’s composure and ability to pace an innings under pressure, comparing his focused approach to that of legendary batter Sir Don Bradman.
Gavaskar described Gill’s knock as a “captain’s innings”, highlighting his determination to remain at the crease until the end and guide India to victory.
“He deals with every ball as if it’s the first ball that he’s facing. That was the secret of Sir Don Bradman’s batting,” Gavaskar said, adding that this approach allows Gill to play risk-free cricket while drawing on a wide range of shots.
Gill will have an opportunity to complete a 3-0 series sweep when India face the West Indies in the final ODI at the new PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh on Saturday.
