Actor Suhail Nayyar has reacted to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) proposed 570 per cent hike in entertainment tax on cinema halls and performing-arts venues in Mumbai, saying the move could make movie tickets more expensive.
Nayyar, who is preparing for the release of his upcoming film Udta Teer, shared his views during a conversation with IANS in Andheri West, Mumbai, as part of the film’s promotional activities.
“I think movie tickets are going to be more expensive. Popcorn is anyway expensive, it’s more expensive than the movie ticket,” the actor said.
However, he noted that the proposal had not yet been finalised and could still be revised or rejected. “I guess the tickets will be more costly. But, you never know, things change. They have just proposed it, they might not go ahead with it. Let’s see what happens, then we’ll talk about it,” he added.
The BMC has proposed a 570 per cent increase in entertainment tax across cinema halls and performing-arts venues, with the revised rates awaiting approval from the Maharashtra government’s Urban Development Department.
Under the proposed structure, the tax on multiplexes could increase from ₹60 to ₹400 per show, while single-screen air-conditioned cinemas could face a levy of ₹200 per show. Drama performances, jalsas and other entertainment programmes could attract a tax of ₹100 per show.
The proposal is part of the civic body’s efforts to generate additional revenue, with an annual collection target of around ₹400–500 crore from entertainment tax. Exemptions for Marathi and Gujarati films, plays and one-act plays are proposed to continue.
The existing tax rates will remain in force until the state government approves and officially notifies the revised structure.
