The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has won three key posts in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections, securing the president, secretary and joint secretary positions.
The result has prompted political discussion about youth preferences, nationalism and the competing approaches to student politics, with BJP leaders highlighting the outcome as significant beyond the university’s electoral contest.
Delhi University has a diverse and cosmopolitan student community, with students coming from different regions, backgrounds and social groups. Often described as a “mini-India”, the university is among the country’s prominent higher education institutions.
“Against this backdrop, the ABVP’s performance carries a political message that extends beyond the university’s electoral boundaries,” a BJP leader said.
Political observers said the result could be viewed as reflecting the appeal of growth-oriented and nationalist themes among sections of young voters. They also said the outcome provides ABVP an opportunity to highlight its connection with students who identify with these issues.
The victory has also come amid criticism of the Congress and its approach to youth politics. According to the ABVP’s political narrative, the Congress and its supporters attempted to influence young voters through their campaign, while the organisation has interpreted the election result as an indication that students did not accept what it described as misleading political messaging.
The phrase “Jhooth Ki Goonj” has been used in the political interpretation of the results to argue that negative or misleading campaigning did not resonate with students at Delhi University.
The election also carries significance against the backdrop of the longstanding contest between ABVP and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). NSUI had dominated DUSU politics for extended periods in earlier years, while the current results saw the organisation fail to win any of the four top posts.
BJP leaders have interpreted the results as evidence of a disconnect between Congress-style student politics and sections of the youth. That assessment, however, is a political interpretation of the election outcome.
ABVP’s performance in North Campus has further added to the significance of the result. The area includes prominent institutions such as Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), Hindu College, Hansraj College, Kirori Mal College (KMC), Ramjas College and the Faculty of Law.
Analysts cited the support for ABVP across these institutions as significant given their academic reputation and diverse student populations.
