At least three people were killed and six others injured in a shooting incident at Banga National High School in Banga, South Cotabato, on Friday, local media reported.
South Cotabato Governor Reynald Tamayo confirmed the casualties, according to Philstar.
The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) said it had mobilised teams to provide emergency assistance following the shooting.
In a statement on Facebook, the PRC said preliminary reports indicated that six injured people had been taken to Dantom Doctors Hospital and South Cotabato Provincial Hospital. It also reported one fatality and said the suspected shooter was reportedly a student among those injured.
PRC Chairman and CEO Richard J. Gordon said the organisation’s teams were providing immediate assistance to those affected.
The Department of Education said it was “deeply concerned” about the incident and urged the public to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified information while authorities investigate the circumstances.
The department said the safety and well-being of learners, teachers and school personnel remained its foremost priority.
It added that it was coordinating with the Schools Division Office, Regional Office, local authorities and law enforcement agencies to verify the incident and provide assistance. Psychological first aid and mental health and psychosocial support were also being made available to those affected.
The latest incident comes amid other reports of school shootings in the Philippines.
Last month, a shooting was reported at the junior high school building of Ateneo de Zamboanga University, where a student allegedly used two pistols to shoot dead a classmate, according to Philstar.
On June 22, at least three students and 20 others were injured after two students allegedly opened fire at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City.
Further details about the circumstances and motive behind Friday’s shooting were awaited as the investigation continued.
