Kolkata, September 16, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha member Mahua Moitra on Wednesday alleged that BJP workers hurled eggs at her vehicle as she was leaving a party meeting in Tehatta, West Bengal’s Nadia district.

Moitra shared videos of the incident on social media and alleged that BJP office-bearers had surrounded the venue and targeted her convoy as she departed after the meeting.

Referring to remarks made by Supreme Court Justice Dipankar Datta during a recent hearing, Moitra said she faced the incident in the spirit of the judge’s observation that politicians should not fear egg attacks when freedom fighters had faced bullets. The Supreme Court had made the remarks in August while declining to entertain Moitra’s plea seeking permission to appear virtually before police in a case.

“BJP office bearers (NOT public) surrounded my meeting and pelted eggs as I left,” Moitra said in a social media post, thanking Justice Datta for what she described as upholding constitutional protections.

She also criticised the officer-in-charge of Tehatta Police Station, Supriya Ranjan Maji, over an alleged claim that he had not been informed about her visit to Tehatta.

Moitra said the Nadia district Superintendent of Police had issued a letter regarding her visit, with a copy sent to the Tehatta police station officer, and questioned why the officer had allegedly denied receiving information.

The BJP, however, denied involvement in the incident.

Subrata Kobiraj, the BJP legislator from Tehatta, claimed that the egg attack was the result of factional differences within the TMC’s Nadia unit and said BJP workers had no role in it.

“This was the result of factional conflict within Trinamool Congress. Here, one group is backing Moitra, while another is against her. Trinamool Congress in Nadia is now divided into two groups, and an anti-Moitra group attacked her. BJP had nothing to do with it,” Kobiraj said.

The latest incident comes amid continuing tensions surrounding Moitra’s visits to her Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency. Earlier this month, the Calcutta High Court directed the West Bengal Police to provide security to Moitra during her visits to the constituency following allegations of repeated harassment and egg-pelting.

The competing allegations over Wednesday’s incident come as the political confrontation between the TMC and BJP continues in West Bengal.
