Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday dismissed speculation about instability in his government, saying he has complete faith in the National Conference (NC) legislators and is not worried about any attempt to poach them.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC), Omar said he had no fear of any of his party MLAs switching sides.
“Do I count my party MLAs daily or not? You are asking this, aren’t you? So you ask am I afraid that some of my MLAs will slip away? I am not at all afraid. I have complete faith in my people,” he said.
Without naming the individuals behind the speculation, Omar alleged that some critics were acting at the behest of intelligence agencies based on Gupkar Road in Srinagar.
He claimed that the people fuelling such speculation were the same individuals who had approached him for positions after the NC government was formed but were not accommodated.
“These people who are doing this, I know who they are. These are a couple of people who take their envelopes from the offices of the agencies of Gupkar Road,” Omar said, adding that he had refrained from naming them to protect their dignity.
The Chief Minister also hit out at political commentators critical of his administration, alleging that some had turned against the J&K government on social media after being denied government accommodation.
He said such criticism was driven by “selfishness” and asserted that he was not concerned by it.
Speculation had also emerged that Omar was delaying a reshuffle of his council of ministers because of concerns over possible dissent among NC MLAs who could be left out of the reshuffled Cabinet. Several legislators currently outside the Cabinet were reportedly expecting ministerial berths.
