Timely action by the J&K Crime Branch’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) Kashmir has resulted in the refund of around Rs 4.50 crore to 13 bank depositors affected by alleged financial irregularities at HDFC Bank’s Shopian branch, officials said on Tuesday.
According to a statement issued by Crime Branch Kashmir, the refunds followed a time-bound investigation and prompt action in the Shopian HDFC Bank irregularities case, providing relief to the affected depositors.
The case relates to FIR No. 30/2025, registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act following a complaint concerning financial irregularities at the HDFC Bank branch in Shopian.
The investigation was subsequently transferred to the J&K Crime Branch on the directions of Police Headquarters for a detailed probe.
During the investigation, EOW Kashmir identified five principal accused, including former branch managers and employees of HDFC Bank who had been posted in Shopian and Pulwama. All five were arrested on February 18.
After completing its investigation, EOW Kashmir filed a charge sheet against 11 accused persons before the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Shopian, in May.
Criminal proceedings in the case are continuing before the competent court.
The Crime Branch said EOW Kashmir remains committed to taking the case to its logical conclusion and ensuring that all accused persons are dealt with strictly in accordance with law.
The Economic Offences Wing is the specialised unit of the J&K Crime Branch responsible for investigating high-profile economic offences. The statement said such cases require dedicated investigation teams supported by technology, as territorial police personnel are also responsible for round-the-clock law-and-order duties and monitoring anti-social and anti-national activities.
