Howrah, September 15, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested four people, including two public servants of the Lucknow-based Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO), in connection with an alleged Rs 4 lakh bribery case in Howrah, West Bengal.

According to the CBI, those arrested are RDSO Deputy Director Ashutosh Kumar and Senior Section Engineer Deepak Kumar. The agency also arrested Sashank Agarwal and Swarup Kumar Rai, identified as representatives of Kolkata-based private company Utkarsh India Limited.

The CBI registered the case on Tuesday following allegations that the two public servants, in conspiracy with the private company representatives, had sought an undue advantage in exchange for issuing a favourable plant and machinery inspection report.

Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap at a hotel in Howrah and caught the accused while they were allegedly accepting Rs 4 lakh as illegal gratification from representatives of the private company.

During the operation, the agency also recovered Rs 4.73 lakh in cash, according to its statement.

The CBI subsequently conducted searches at the residential and office premises of the accused at multiple locations in Kolkata, Lucknow and Bihar. The searches led to the recovery and seizure of incriminating documents and digital evidence, the agency said.

The four accused are to be produced before a special court for further custody proceedings.

In a separate bribery case, the CBI arrested Chandra Shekhar Gupta, Chief Health Inspector at Bhojudih under the Adra Division of South Eastern Railway in Bokaro.

The agency said Gupta was arrested following a complaint alleging that he had demanded Rs 25,000 from the complainant for sanctioning medical leave. The CBI laid a trap and allegedly caught Gupta red-handed while accepting Rs 10,000 from the complainant.

Searches were also conducted at Gupta’s office and residential premises. He will be produced before a Special CBI Court in Dhanbad, the agency said.
