The Janata Dal-United (JD-U), a key BJP ally in Bihar, has adopted a cautious stance on the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state following Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s announcement that the UCC would be implemented in all 21 states governed by the BJP-led NDA.
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and senior JD-U leader Vijay Kumar said the party would first examine the provisions of the UCC Bill once its draft is made public before taking a decision.
“The provisions of the UCC Bill have not yet been made public. First, we will see in what form the UCC Bill is introduced and study its provisions,” Kumar told reporters.
He said JD-U’s working national president had already stated that the party would discuss the provisions directly with the Home Minister after examining them.
Kumar added that the issue would subsequently be discussed within the party as well as with alliance partners. “If there are any concerns regarding the UCC, we will directly discuss them with the Home Minister,” he said.
Bihar Minister Ashok Choudhary described the UCC as a “somewhat sensitive issue” and said the party would discuss the matter thoroughly, including concerns about protecting the people affected by its implementation.
Meanwhile, JD-U MP Kaushalendra Kumar said the party would adhere to former Chief Minister and JD-U supremo Nitish Kumar’s decision on the issue.
“We are with the BJP at the Centre, but when it comes to the state, we will have to think about it,” he said.
Kaushalendra Kumar added that Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, despite being from the BJP, would consider Bihar’s interests and support the party’s decision. He said JD-U would abide by whatever Nitish Kumar had decided for the state.
The Bihar BJP, however, said all stakeholders would be consulted before implementation. State BJP president Sanjay Saraogi pointed out that the UCC had been passed in several states and implemented in some places.
He said the UCC had received support from all constituent parties in the Lok Sabha and reiterated that discussions would be held with all stakeholders before its implementation in NDA-ruled states.
