Director Ben Rekhi has revealed that it took a decade to bring his recently released film ‘Last Man in Tower’ to the screen after he first read the novel on which the film is based.
Speaking to IANS during the film’s promotions alongside actors Manoj Bajpayee and Divya Dutta, Rekhi described the process of adapting the novel and bringing it to audiences as a challenging task.
He said his decision to turn the book into a film came almost immediately after reading it.
“Reading the book to deciding it needs to be a film was very fast. When I finished reading it, I was like, ‘My God, this is so cinematic’,” Rekhi said.
However, he added that it took 10 years from that point to mount the film. While the project took considerable time to reach the screen, the director said he believed that films arrive at the right moment.
“I really believe that things happen at the right moment. And this film is coming into the world just at the moment that the world is ready to receive it and needs to see it,” he said.
Discussing the complexity of the story, Rekhi said the film explores how deeply people are influenced by the opinions and perceptions of others, despite the common belief that one should not worry about what others think.
He said this conflict is central to Bajpayee’s character, whose perception of himself clashes with how others see him.
“The thing about Manoj’s character that makes him so complicated is that the way he views himself comes in direct conflict to how other people see him. And that’s very destabilizing as a person,” Rekhi said.
The director added that one of the most unsettling experiences for a person can be discovering that others do not perceive them in the way they perceive themselves.
“I think one of the scariest moments is realizing you’re not who you thought you were, where people don’t see you the way that you see yourself,” he said.
‘Last Man in Tower’, starring Manoj Bajpayee, is currently playing in cinemas.
