A Bangladesh High Court has granted bail to Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das in two cases, but he will remain in custody as his release continues to be blocked by proceedings in other cases, local media reported.
A bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher granted bail on Sunday on two separate petitions filed by Chinmoy, spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jot.
The cases were registered at Kotwali Police Station in Chattogram on November 26, 2024, over allegations of vandalism and obstructing police personnel from carrying out their duties.
Chinmoy’s lawyer, Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya, told The Daily Star that his client has been accused in six cases, including murder and sedition. Although bail has been secured in five cases through the High Court and lower courts, the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division has stayed the High Court’s bail order in the sedition case, the lawyer said.
Chinmoy was arrested in Dhaka on November 25, 2024, and sent to jail the following day after a Chattogram court rejected his bail plea. The court again denied bail on December 11.
His arrest triggered protests by members of the Hindu community in Bangladesh and abroad.
Meanwhile, the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) condemned his continued detention, calling it a “travesty” and alleging “government-sponsored persecution”. The organisation questioned the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh and urged greater international attention to the situation.
CoHNA also alleged that violence against Hindus amounted to a “slow genocide” and questioned whether the US Commission on International Religious Freedom was adequately monitoring developments in Bangladesh.
