All 14 Indian nationals aboard a yacht involved in an incident off Yemen’s coast are safe and are believed to be in the Hodeidah area, the Indian Embassy said on Friday, adding that it would continue efforts to ensure their well-being.
In a statement posted on X, the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia said it had received reports indicating that all 14 Indians were safe. It added that efforts were underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and obtain verified information.
The embassy had earlier said it was contacting various parties to gather details about the incident reported off Yemen’s coast on October 22. It noted that the prevailing conflict situation was making it difficult to obtain precise information and promised further updates once authentic details became available.
On Thursday, Yemen’s Houthi forces claimed they had launched a rescue operation after Saudi Arabia allegedly targeted an Indian yacht carrying 14 Indian nationals near Zuqar Island in the southern Red Sea.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the information was preliminary and that further details would be provided later. The allegation regarding Saudi involvement could not be independently verified from the information available.
The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions following an attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday, in which an Indian national and another person were killed, while two other Indians were injured, according to the Indian Embassy in Riyadh.
India on Thursday condemned attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, including the airport and Saudi Aramco’s Shaybah oil field. The Ministry of External Affairs said the Indian Embassy in Riyadh was in contact with Saudi authorities and would provide all possible assistance to affected Indian nationals.
India also called for an immediate end to attacks on civilian and critical infrastructure and expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia.
