New Delhi, October 23, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Pakistan’s decision to impose emergency measures and Governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on security grounds is facing mounting challenges, with militant groups, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), threatening to intensify attacks in the region.

The Shehbaz Sharif-led government reportedly took the decision following instructions from Pakistan Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir. However, according to an official cited in the report, attacks have continued despite the move, prompting Sharif and Munir to chair a series of meetings to review the situation and discuss the next course of action.

“The problem for Islamabad is that attacks in KP have continued despite the decision. In fact, groups challenging the establishment have vowed to intensify their operations and carry out deadlier attacks in the region,” the official said.

Pakistan observers believe Islamabad may have misjudged the situation, with deteriorating relations with the Afghan Taliban adding to the security challenges. The TTP remains a major concern for the Pakistani establishment.

Experts said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government in KP had repeatedly sought federal assistance to contain the violence. However, they alleged that Islamabad was concerned the PTI could use such support to gain political mileage.

An Indian Intelligence Bureau official also said relations between China and Pakistan had come under strain following terrorist attacks targeting Chinese workers in the region. The report said the latest emergency measures had not eased security concerns, as the TTP had vowed to intensify attacks on security forces and step up strikes against Chinese workers.

Following a series of meetings between the federal government and the military leadership in Islamabad, officials decided to finalise counterterrorism operations for the region. Discussions have also reportedly taken place on announcing a comprehensive financial package for KP.

The establishment is additionally looking at recalibrating local infrastructure and improving resource management. Residents of the region have long complained that while KP’s resources are utilised, the benefits are directed elsewhere in Pakistan.

However, an official cited in the report expressed doubts about the long-term effectiveness of the measures, arguing that similar responses in the past had failed to prevent recurring crises in the province.

The latest developments highlight the continuing security and governance challenges facing Pakistan as it attempts to contain militant violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
