Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has sparked a discussion on social media after comparing the alleged shooters involved in the firing incident near actor Tiger Shroff’s car with the way criminals are portrayed and cast in films.
In a post on X, Varma remarked that the alleged shooters’ appearance would not have earned them even a minor role in a film depicting a villain’s gang. He used the comparison to highlight the difference between real-life criminals and their cinematic portrayals.
“The way the shooters of @iTIGERSHROFF looked like, in a film they wouldn’t be cast even as tea supplying boys in a villains den,” Varma wrote.
The filmmaker also referred to gangster Dawood Ibrahim, suggesting that real-life appearances do not always match the image filmmakers create on screen.
“Real life casting director is very strange compared to reel life casting director,” he added, tagging casting director Mukesh Chhabra.
Varma’s post drew mixed reactions from social media users. Some agreed with his observation that film portrayals of gangsters often differ from reality, while others shared their own views on casting choices in Bollywood.
One user commented that casting directors choose people who can be marketed rather than those who resemble real-life criminals, adding that Bollywood gangsters are often depicted in suits and beards.
Another user suggested that Varma himself should play a character based on Dawood Ibrahim, while a third praised the filmmaker for depicting real-life incidents in his films and criticised other directors for avoiding such subjects.
This was not Varma’s first reaction to the firing incident involving Tiger Shroff. Earlier, he described the case as unusual, suggesting that the alleged motive appeared to be vanity and pride rather than extortion, contract killing or settling scores.
“What happened with @iTIGERSHROFF is a never before seen phenomenon. Instead of killings relating to extortion, contract murders, settlements etc, for the first time ever, they seem to be wanting to kill for vanity and pride,” he wrote on X.
The firing incident took place on October 19 outside a football club near Pushpa Narsee Park in Mumbai’s Juhu area. Tiger Shroff escaped unharmed, while his driver and an autorickshaw driver were injured in the firing.
Three people suspected of involvement in the incident were subsequently apprehended in Kota, Rajasthan.
