Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday spoke to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Delhi Police Commissioner and NDRF chief to assess the situation following a building collapse in Satya Niketan, as rescue teams continued operations at the site.
Shah said he was deeply distressed by the incident and that the local administration and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were conducting intensive rescue operations in close coordination. He also said that those injured were being provided necessary medical assistance.
“Deeply distressed by the collapse of a building at Satya Niketan in Delhi. Spoke with the Chief Minister, Commissioner of Police, Delhi, and the Director General, NDRF, and assessed the situation on the ground,” Shah said in a post on X.
He added that he was praying for the speedy recovery of those injured. Shah also cancelled his scheduled engagements in Goa following the news of the Delhi tragedy.
According to Delhi Police, six people have been rescued from the debris so far.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi expressed grief over the incident, describing it as “extremely heartbreaking and alarming”. He urged the NDRF, Delhi Fire Service and other rescue teams to make every possible effort to reach all those trapped and ensure that the injured receive immediate and proper medical treatment.
Rahul Gandhi said Congress and NSUI workers were present at the site and ready to assist the rescue effort. He also raised concerns over the living conditions of students who, due to inadequate hostel facilities at colleges and universities, are forced to stay in overcrowded paying guest accommodations.
“Every student’s life is precious,” he said, stressing that their safety must be ensured under all circumstances.
Earlier, Delhi Police said the collapsed building was around 40-50 years old and consisted of a basement and five upper floors. It was being used as a paying guest accommodation for students, with repair work underway in the basement when the collapse occurred.
