Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a State Visit to Uzbekistan and later travel to Kyrgyzstan to attend the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Thursday.
Modi will arrive in Tashkent on August 29 for a two-day bilateral visit at the invitation of Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. It will be his fourth visit to Uzbekistan.
During the visit, Modi and Mirziyoyev will hold delegation-level talks to review the progress of the strategic partnership and discuss cooperation in areas including trade and investment, defence, digital connectivity, energy, education and people-to-people ties.
The two leaders are also expected to exchange views on advancing their respective development visions of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ and ‘Uzbekistan-2030’.
According to Sibi George, Secretary (West) in the MEA, discussions will also cover critical minerals, healthcare, business-to-business engagement, education, space, technology, culture and people-to-people exchanges.
Modi is expected to visit the Shastri Memorial in Tashkent and the Mahatma Gandhi Centre at Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies. He will also interact with Indologists and scholars at the university.
“The Prime Minister’s visit will reaffirm the close, multi-faceted and growing strategic partnership between India and Uzbekistan,” George said during a media briefing on Thursday.
India and Uzbekistan have maintained extensive bilateral and multilateral engagements over the years. Mirziyoyev visited India for a State Visit in 2018 and also attended the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in 2019. Modi and Mirziyoyev have met on the sidelines of COP28 in Dubai in 2023, the BRICS Summit in Kazan in 2024 and the SCO Summit in Tianjin, China, in 2025.
After Uzbekistan, Modi will travel to Bishkek on August 31 for the 26th SCO Summit. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the SCO, with the theme “25 Years of the SCO: Together Towards Sustainable Peace, Development, and Prosperity”.
The Bishkek programme includes a welcome dinner on August 31 and the summit plenary the following day, where Modi will deliver his remarks. Several bilateral meetings are also being planned on the sidelines.
Modi is additionally expected to attend the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games along with other leaders from SCO member states.
In May, SCO Secretary General Nurlan Yermekbayev, a former Defence Minister of Kazakhstan, visited India and Nalanda University.
