India will look to strengthen their position in Pool D of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 when they take on England in their second group match at the Wagener Hockey Stadium on Monday.
Both teams made winning starts to the tournament. India defeated Wales 3-1, while England registered an identical 4-1 victory over Pakistan. A second consecutive win would put either side in a strong position to finish at the top of the pool.
India’s opening victory was built around their penalty-corner execution, with all three goals coming from set pieces. Sanjay opened the scoring before captain Harmanpreet Singh converted twice to secure three points.
However, India will be looking for greater efficiency from open play after creating several chances against Wales without finding the target from a field goal.
The clash also renews a competitive rivalry between the two sides. At the Paris Olympics, India defeated England in a memorable quarter-final despite playing most of the match with 10 men after Amit Rohidas was shown a red card in the 17th minute. India went on to win the bronze medal at the Games.
The teams subsequently met twice in the FIH Pro League in London, with both matches going to shootouts. India and England won one match each.
India midfielder Hardik Singh said the rivalry remained intense on the field but stressed that there was no animosity between the players.
“When two evenly-matched teams face off, then things can heat up on the pitch,” Hardik said. “But we don’t carry any animosity, as we are friends with many players in the England team irrespective of whatever happened in the Paris Olympics quarter-final.”
He added that India had generally enjoyed success against England in major tournaments but could not afford to underestimate them.
India head coach Craig Fulton also described the contest as a crucial one, saying the World Cup presented a different challenge from the Pro League.
“Since we have started playing the Pro League, it’s been pretty equal. But the World Cup is different. It’s a must-win game for both the teams,” Fulton said.
England are the highest-ranked team in Pool D, he noted, adding that India would need to execute their plans against a side with quality players and a strong structure.
The head-to-head record is also closely contested, with India holding a narrow 10-9 advantage in wins, while five matches between the teams have ended in draws.
The top two teams from each of the four pools will advance to the next stage and remain in contention for the semi-finals, while the remaining teams will enter classification matches.
India will therefore look to combine the defensive discipline and penalty-corner efficiency displayed against Wales with improved finishing from open play when they face England.
