Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Sunday expressed grief over the death of former party MLA and former Deputy Speaker of the state Assembly, Asish Banerjee, whose body was found at his Rampurhat residence.
In a post on X, Mamata Banerjee said the death had left her “deeply disturbed” and recalled Asish Banerjee’s long association with teaching, public service and the people of Rampurhat and Birbhum.
She said the former legislator had served as a five-term MLA and worked for development in Rampurhat, undertaking several projects for the people of the area. According to Mamata Banerjee, he had faced repeated allegations and sustained pressure despite his record of public service.
“What makes this tragedy even more painful is the immense mental and emotional strain he appears to have endured in his final days,” she said, adding that the circumstances surrounding the pressure he faced should prompt reflection on the human cost of prolonged political hostility.
Mamata Banerjee offered condolences to his family, loved ones, former students and supporters, saying his absence would be deeply felt.
Asish Banerjee was found hanging inside a room at the Trinamool Congress office operating from his Rampurhat residence on Sunday, police said. A one-page handwritten note in Bengali was also recovered from the spot.
In the note, he reportedly wrote that he had made a mistake by entering politics and stated that he had never been involved in corruption during his political career.
His death has triggered questions across political circles over the circumstances that may have led to the extreme step. Questions have also been raised over whether political pressure played a role or whether there was another reason.
Police have begun an investigation and sent the body for post-mortem examination. Investigators are also examining the authenticity of the handwritten note to determine whether it was written by Asish Banerjee.
A five-time Trinamool Congress MLA from the Rampurhat Assembly constituency in Birbhum district, Asish Banerjee had also served in the previous Mamata Banerjee-led state Cabinet and held the post of Deputy Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly.
