Congress MP Tariq Anwar on Thursday disapproved of the Opposition’s use of toy monkeys during a protest in the Parliament complex, stressing that lawmakers must maintain the dignity of the House and their office.
Several Opposition MPs, including Congress leaders Pawan Khera, Imran Pratapgarhi and Jebi Mather, participated in the demonstration on the final day of the Monsoon Session. Khera led the protest while holding a soft toy monkey as the MPs raised slogans against the BJP-led government.
“I believe that we should always be careful to maintain the dignity of the House as well as the dignity of our position as MPs,” Anwar told IANS.
The protest centred on Opposition demands for answers from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over alleged police excesses against student protesters during the July 20 Parliament march and alleged irregularities involving donations made to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
MPs from the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (SP) and other Opposition parties participated in the demonstration.
The final day of the session also saw separate protests by NDA and Opposition MPs at Makar Dwar, with the two groups again coming face to face after the Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die.
Opposition MPs carried placards alleging embezzlement of Ram Temple donations and questioned Shah’s absence from Parliament. NDA MPs, meanwhile, raised slogans and displayed placards targeting Congress and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over alleged police action against protesters during the ‘Vidhan Sabha Gherao’ march in Jharkhand.
On Wednesday, Shah said he was ready to answer questions concerning the police action during the July 20 Parliament march over the NEET paper leak issue, while accusing the Opposition of deliberately preventing a discussion.
Gandhi responded that the Opposition was not interested in the Home Minister’s “imagination or lectures” and said young people wanted to know who had ordered police to “shoot” at them.
