At least five Baloch youths were allegedly killed by Pakistani forces in an encounter in Balochistan’s Panjgur district, according to human rights organisations, which have described the incident as an alleged extrajudicial killing.
The Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) said the five men were killed in what it described as a “fake encounter” on August 10 in the Cheedagi area of Panjgur.
One of the deceased was identified as Shoaib, who the rights group alleged had been forcibly disappeared by Pakistani forces for more than three years before being killed.
“The killing of Shoaib is another grave human rights violation in Balochistan where young Baloch lives continue to be lost,” the BYC said, alleging that enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention, torture and extrajudicial killings have left families across the region in prolonged uncertainty.
Another victim, identified as 23-year-old Peerjan Baloch, was allegedly killed in the same encounter after remaining missing for nearly 66 days.
The BYC said Peerjan’s family had not been informed of any alleged crime against him and claimed that no warrant or FIR had been presented to them before he was taken away.
“For 66 days, Peerjan’s family was left without answers. They were never informed of any crime committed by him,” the organisation said.
Another victim was identified as Hafiz Mudassar, while the identities of the remaining two men had not been established, according to the rights groups.
Paank, the Human Rights Department of the Baloch National Movement, condemned the reported killings and called for an independent, impartial and transparent investigation. It also sought identification of all the victims and accountability for those responsible.
“The Pakistani authorities must immediately end enforced disappearances, disclose the whereabouts of all missing persons, and ensure that detainees are brought before courts and provided due process and fair trials,” Paank said.
The organisation also urged the United Nations and the international community to intervene and press Pakistan to address allegations of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in Balochistan.
The allegations could not be independently verified.
