Tear Gas, Water Cannons Used as Jharkhand Students Breach Barricades Near Assembly

Ranchi, August 10, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Police fired tear gas shells and used water cannons on protesting students after they breached multiple security barricades and moved towards the Jharkhand Assembly on Monday, escalating an agitation over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations.

The students marched towards the Vidhan Sabha despite heightened security arrangements in the area. Police also carried out a lathi charge after the protesters pushed through barricades and continued advancing towards the Assembly premises.

Several protesters were seen continuing to raise slogans and dance despite water being sprayed at them by security personnel.

Ranchi City SP Paras Rana said the demonstration had initially remained largely peaceful but the situation had subsequently become difficult for those organising the protest to control.

“There are many people who are not ready to listen to anyone. They are neither listening to the JPSC Reform Manch nor the Nyay Manch. They are not ready to listen to anyone,” Rana told reporters.

He said protest organisers had repeatedly appealed for restraint, with most participants remaining peaceful, but alleged that a section of the crowd resorted to violence and stone-pelting.

“90 per cent of the students are peaceful, but around 10 per cent of the crowd is unwilling to listen and is resorting to violence. Some of them are also pelting stones. We had to use mild force to evacuate the police personnel,” Rana told IANS.

Rana also said police used two smoke grenades in the area from where stones were allegedly being thrown. He described the rounds as dummy and said they were deployed to create a psychological effect and move protesters away from the location.

The protest has been organised by recruitment aspirants demanding greater transparency, accountability and fairness in the examination process.

The situation escalated after demonstrators broke through several barricades and continued towards the Assembly, prompting security personnel to use multiple measures to contain the crowd.

The students have said their agitation will continue until their concerns over the recruitment examinations are addressed and concrete action is taken against those allegedly responsible for irregularities.
