A banner put up in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area on Sunday warned political leaders joining the BJP against indulging in extortion, saying those found involved would face “egg therapy”.
The banner was placed by Sanjoy Poira, a former BJP mandal president in Salt Lake, who said his message was aimed primarily at leaders switching to the BJP from other parties. He added that the warning would apply equally to BJP leaders found engaging in extortion.
Speaking to IANS, Poira said voters in West Bengal had rejected syndicates, extortion and “cut money” and cautioned leaders entering the BJP against continuing such practices.
“Today the people of West Bengal have voted against syndicates, extortion, and cut money. So, right now, we are seeing the BJP’s door has been opened slightly. There may be political calculations behind this in the national interest. But those (Trinamool Congress leaders) who are coming through this slightly opened door are all people who were involved in extortion and taking cut money,” he said.
Poira said the BJP should not allow such practices to continue and warned that leaders engaging in extortion would face public backlash.
“We don’t want to resort to egg therapy. We want to warn the leaders that this (extortion) won’t be tolerated anymore in West Bengal. The BJP has a zero-tolerance policy against extortion and any forms of corruption. Therefore, if they indulge in extortion, then they will have to face the eggs,” he said.
Following the change of government in the state after the Assembly election, several Trinamool Congress leaders, former ministers and councillors were arrested in cases involving allegations including extortion, assault, molestation and intimidation. In several instances, people threw eggs at the accused while they were being escorted by police and raised slogans accusing them of being “thieves”.
West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya recently said eliminating extortion in the state would take time. He also cautioned BJP workers against involvement in illegal activities, asserting that action would be taken if allegations of corruption were established.
Bhattacharya has also urged party workers and leaders to move away from the political practices associated with the previous Left Front and Trinamool Congress governments.
