Jorge Messi, father and longtime agent of Argentina and Inter Miami football star Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68 following a prolonged health battle, according to multiple Argentine media reports.
Jorge had been dealing with health problems for some time. Lionel Messi had earlier acknowledged that his family was going through a difficult period but had not disclosed details about his father’s condition.
The situation came into focus in June when Messi became emotional after scoring against Algeria. Asked about his tears, the football star said they were unrelated to the game and that he had experienced “a few difficult days”, prompting speculation about his father’s health.
Amid conflicting reports, the Messi family issued a statement confirming that Jorge was facing health issues and was under medical supervision. The family also criticised speculation surrounding his condition and appealed for privacy.
The statement said the family was concerned by the “lack of sensitivity, respect, and discretion” shown in reports concerning what it described as a strictly private matter. It also thanked supporters for their affection and asked that Jorge and the family be given privacy and personal space.
Jorge’s health was also reportedly linked to changes in Lionel Messi’s schedule. The 39-year-old missed the MLS All-Star Game at the end of July, with reports suggesting he had travelled to be with his father. He returned to action for Inter Miami in an MLS match several days later.
Jorge played a major role in his son’s extraordinary football journey, from Lionel’s early years in Rosario, Argentina, to his emergence as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. He remained a constant presence throughout Messi’s career and also served as his agent.
