The United Arab Emirates on Saturday condemned an Iranian missile attack on an Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) tanker while it was transiting the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the attack amounted to a “flagrant violation” of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which emphasises freedom of navigation and rejects attacks on commercial vessels or disruption of international maritime routes.
The ministry said targeting commercial shipping and using the Strait of Hormuz to exert economic pressure or as a means of “blackmail” constituted an “act of piracy” by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
It warned that such actions posed a direct threat to regional stability and global energy security.
ADNOC, the state-owned oil company of Abu Dhabi, is among the world’s largest oil producers.
The UAE called on Iran to stop what it described as “aggressive attacks” and stressed the need for the complete and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Abu Dhabi also reaffirmed its commitment to ending all hostile acts.
The development comes amid renewed tensions between Iran and the United States, with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterating Tehran’s stated commitment to dialogue while maintaining that Iran would not be forced to surrender its rights.
In an interview published on the website of the Iranian President’s office on Friday, Pezeshkian defended Tehran’s decision to enter negotiations with Washington and sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending the conflict.
Pezeshkian said Iran would continue to honour its commitments as long as the US fulfilled its obligations under the agreement.
“Wherever they fail to fulfil their commitment, we have no obligation to continue,” he said.
Iran and the US signed the MoU in June, with the two sides scheduled to conduct negotiations within 60 days towards a final agreement. However, renewed tensions have cast uncertainty over the future of the talks.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical international maritime route for global energy supplies, making any disruption to commercial shipping in the area a significant regional and international concern.
