Norway FA Chief Calls on FIFA President Gianni Infantino to Resign, Says Trust Has Been Lost

Pressure mounted on FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Friday after Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) president Lise Klaveness publicly demanded his resignation, stating that he no longer has the institutional trust required to lead world football.

Speaking after the NFF’s monthly board meeting, Klaveness said relations between FIFA and several key stakeholders had been seriously affected following controversy over the governing body’s now-withdrawn investment proposal.

“Gianni Infantino no longer has the institutional trust required to lead FIFA in a stable manner. The international football community is facing a difficult period, and we believe new leadership is needed. We will therefore ask the FIFA president to resign,” Klaveness said, according to reports.

The call comes after FIFA withdrew its proposed investment plan that involved selling a minority stake in commercial rights associated with the FIFA World Cup. The proposal faced criticism from several football associations and confederations, particularly in Europe, over concerns related to transparency, governance and control of the sport’s most prestigious tournament.

Klaveness said the Norwegian federation hopes more UEFA member associations will support its stance in the coming weeks, though it is not currently seeking an extraordinary meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee.

“We are in regular dialogue with UEFA and other member associations. Whether more countries formally join this position is something that will develop over time. Our intention is to communicate directly with FIFA and ask the president to step down,” she said.

Klaveness, who became head of the Norwegian federation in 2022, said the latest controversy reflects broader governance concerns that Norway has raised with FIFA over several years.

UEFA has previously expressed dissatisfaction with FIFA’s handling of the investment proposal, alleging that member associations were not adequately consulted before the plan was announced. Although FIFA later withdrew the proposal and Infantino apologised to all 211 member associations, UEFA maintained that the episode highlighted deeper governance issues.

UEFA has also warned of possible further action, including a boycott, if meaningful reforms are not introduced within FIFA.
