Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has officially declared August 15 as ‘India Day’ in the state, recognising India’s Independence Day and celebrating the contributions of the Indian-American community to Massachusetts’ social, cultural and economic life.
Governor Healey signed the proclamation on August 1, marking the occasion of the 79th anniversary of India’s independence in 1947. Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Kimberley Driscoll and Secretary of the Commonwealth William Francis Galvin also endorsed the proclamation and encouraged residents across the state to observe India Day on August 15.
The proclamation acknowledged the global presence of the Indian diaspora, noting that more than 36 million people of Indian origin live outside India, including over five million in the United States.
It highlighted the significant role of Indian Americans in Massachusetts through contributions in areas including entrepreneurship, public service, education, healthcare, innovation and scientific research.
“The Indian American population in Massachusetts has made significant contributions in fields such as medicine, science, technology, education, business and public service, enriching the cultural and economic fabric of the Commonwealth,” the proclamation stated.
The declaration also recognised the way the Indian-American community in Massachusetts celebrates India’s Independence Day through cultural events showcasing India’s heritage, democratic values and commitment to peace and progress.
Meanwhile, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has also declared August 15 as ‘India Day’ in the city, according to reports.
India will celebrate its 80th Independence Day on August 15, commemorating the country’s freedom from British colonial rule in 1947. The day remains a symbol of India’s journey from colonial rule to becoming the world’s largest democracy.
