Leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Friday accused the Congress of adopting “double standards” over the ongoing student protests in Jharkhand against alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).
The ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance, which includes Congress, has faced criticism over the protests, with students demanding action against alleged paper leaks and reforms in the recruitment process.
Speaking outside Parliament, Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan said governments must maintain dialogue with protesting students and address their concerns.
“Regarding the protest in Jharkhand, I believe that the government, especially policymakers whom the youth look up to, should continuously engage in dialogue with students. I am happy that our Central Government has respected their sentiments and given them due importance. The Jharkhand Government should also do the same,” Paswan said.
Taking an indirect dig at Congress, he said allies of the Jharkhand government were raising the issue through marches but had not visited the state to engage with the protesting students.
BJP MP Tarun Chugh targeted Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, alleging that he was taking different positions in Delhi and Jharkhand.
“If your JMM-Congress government is in power and the students’ demands are genuine, why is the Chief Minister and your government not accepting them?” Chugh asked, adding that Congress had not raised similar concerns over alleged paper leaks in Punjab.
BJP MP Kangana Ranaut also criticised the Opposition, alleging that its approach towards government policies and parliamentary proceedings reflected a “traitor mentality”.
However, Ranaut also clarified her position on Gen Z following criticism over her earlier remarks, saying that young people were a major strength of the government.
“It is because of Gen Z’s mandate that our government is in power for so many years. It is not true that only those 10-15 people who abuse during protests represent Gen Z,” she said.
Ranaut added that students protesting in Jharkhand were conducting themselves peacefully and responsibly, while only a few individuals were giving a negative impression of the younger generation.
“The Gen Z are our biggest strength, and we are proud of them,” she said.
