At least seven people, including the suspected gunman, were killed and 15 others injured in a shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Thailand’s Nonthaburi province on Friday, according to local media reports.
The deceased include three students, three teachers and the alleged shooter, while the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The shooting occurred at around 10 a.m. local time at the school located in Bang Kruai district. Volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation responded after receiving reports of gunfire from inside the campus.
A student who witnessed the incident told local media that an armed individual dressed in a purple physical education uniform fired multiple rounds within the school premises.
According to reports, the suspected shooter was a Grade 9 student who was allegedly carrying a 9mm handgun. He reportedly barricaded himself on the third floor of the school’s pink building after the attack.
Police later found the suspect dead. Preliminary findings suggest he died from self-inflicted injuries, the Bangkok Post reported.
Authorities immediately launched an evacuation operation to move students and staff to safety, while security personnel secured the campus.
Forensic teams and investigators have begun examining the scene to determine the motive behind the attack and reconstruct the sequence of events. Officials have also urged the public to avoid the area and refrain from livestreaming or sharing real-time footage that could interfere with ongoing operations.
The shooting has shocked Thailand and renewed concerns about school safety in the country.
In a separate security incident last month, five soldiers were killed and six civilians injured when unidentified attackers opened fire and hurled explosives at a checkpoint in Narathiwat province. Authorities are continuing efforts to trace those responsible for that attack.
