India’s Amanat Kamboj secured a place in the women’s discus throw final at the World Athletics U20 Championships after producing a season-best effort in the qualification round on Thursday.
The young Indian thrower registered a best throw of 52.58 metres to finish sixth overall in the qualification standings and advance to the final. Amanat had earlier clinched the gold medal in the women’s discus throw at the Asian U20 Championships in May with a throw of 52.24 metres.
With her qualification, Amanat became the third Indian athlete to book a place in the finals at the ongoing championships after javelin throwers Ashish Yadav and T. Dharanidharan advanced to the men’s javelin final.
Ashish topped his qualification group with a throw of 69.87 metres, finishing second overall, while Dharanidharan qualified with an effort of 68.07 metres, placing 12th overall.
South Africa’s U20 champion Jan-Hendrik Heymans led the men’s javelin qualification with a first-attempt throw of 76.02 metres, the only throw beyond the automatic qualifying mark and more than six metres ahead of the next-best effort. Poland’s Aleksander Wojna and China’s Yang Zhaoyi also crossed the 69-metre mark, setting up a closely contested final. Meanwhile, USA’s Nolan Carey, despite entering as one of the favourites, failed to qualify.
The women’s discus throw final is scheduled for Saturday, while the men’s javelin final will also be held later in the competition.
In the men’s 800 metres, Mogali Venkatram advanced to the semifinals after finishing third in his heat with a timing of 1:52.81. However, Uwin Anand, despite clocking a faster 1:52.37, missed out after competing in a quicker qualifying heat.
India’s mixed 4x400m relay quartet of Piyush Raj, Tahura Khatun, Sayed Sabeer and Thiya Arumugam recorded a season-best 3:22.85, but failed to qualify for the final after finishing outside the top nine.
India has fielded a 36-member track and field contingent at the World Athletics U20 Championships, being held from August 5 to 9 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
