A suspected narcotics smuggler was killed in a police encounter in Rajasthan’s Bhilwara district after he and his associates allegedly opened fire while trying to escape a police checkpoint, officials said on Thursday.
One suspect was arrested during the operation, while another managed to flee under the cover of darkness. The Anti-Narcotics Task Force had set up the checkpoint in the Pur police station area following specific information about a suspected drug smuggling movement.
According to Pur Station House Officer Kanhaiyalal, a white luxury car allegedly broke through a police barricade on the Bhilwara-Jaipur highway at high speed late Wednesday night. Police teams chased the vehicle, during which the occupants allegedly fired at the pursuing officers.
Police retaliated, leading to an exchange of fire. One of the alleged smugglers sustained bullet injuries and died at the spot. He was identified as Ganeshram alias Ganpat, a resident of Bhopalgarh in Jodhpur district.
Police said the deceased suffered gunshot injuries to his chest and ribs and had several cases related to narcotics smuggling registered against him.
During the operation, one accused was apprehended, while another escaped by taking advantage of the darkness. Police launched a search operation through the night and set up checkpoints across the district to trace the absconding suspect. However, no further arrest had been made till Thursday morning.
Bhilwara Superintendent of Police Sagar Rana and other senior officials reached the encounter site after receiving information about the incident.
The vehicle allegedly used by the suspects has been seized, while the body of the deceased was sent to the mortuary of Mahatma Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem examination.
A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team inspected the spot and collected evidence as part of the investigation. A heavy police deployment has been maintained in the area, and efforts are underway to trace the absconding accused.
