Sarod maestro Ustaad Amjad Ali Khan has expressed delight over his wife Subhalakshmi Borooah Khan’s vocal debut with the album “Chants for Unity”, saying her voice adds an intimate and deeply personal dimension to the sacred compositions.
“I am especially delighted that my wife, Subhalakshmi Borooah Khan, makes her vocal debut with this album,” Amjad Ali Khan said in a statement.
“Her voice brings an intimate and deeply personal dimension to these sacred chants. I hope this music reminds us that beneath all our differences of language, culture and belief, the human spirit remains one,” he added.
For Subhalakshmi, the album marks a deeply personal musical journey. She said lending her voice to the sacred compositions and being part of a project centred on unity had been a special experience.
“Music and prayer have always had a very intimate place in my heart and this experience has allowed me to bring those two worlds together,” she said.
Subhalakshmi also expressed gratitude for sharing the musical journey with her husband and sons, Amaan and Ayaan, and hoped the chants would bring peace, love and harmony to listeners.
“Chants for Unity” features nine tracks, with Subhalakshmi’s vocals appearing across five sacred compositions — “Navagraha Shlokam”, “Krishna Stuti”, “Shantakaram”, “Ya Devi Sarvabhooteshu” and “Lakshmi Stuti”.
The album brings together the entire family, with Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash, along with their father Ustaad Amjad Ali Khan, conceiving and composing the project.
Amaan and Ayaan said they were particularly moved by their mother making her vocal debut on the album.
“Hearing her sing adds something incredibly intimate and beautiful to the project. For us, this album is ultimately a celebration of devotion, love and the belief that music can transcend every boundary,” they said in a joint statement.
