Actress Anu Aggarwal has recalled a painful incident from one of her last film shoots with legendary actor-filmmaker Dev Anand, revealing that she fractured her coccyx while filming an important scene.
Anu, who had been part of the unfinished film “Return of the Jewel Thief”, shared throwback photographs from the project on Instagram and described the injury and the events that followed.
“I was shooting a scene with Dev Anand when I slipped, fell onto a car and fractured my coccyx,” she wrote.
The actress said the experience was particularly difficult because she was living alone at the time and did not receive assistance from anyone in the production team.
She recalled that a neighbour gave her the name of a doctor. When she consulted him, she was told that she had sought treatment just in time and required immediate surgery. According to Anu, she was warned that delaying the operation could have left her with a permanently crooked spine.
Anu said she recovered soon and was ready to resume shooting. She had also already planned a trip to France in June for a Dhrupad retreat in the lavender fields, where her guru was expected to be.
Recalling her decision to step away from the film world, she said she had already begun feeling detached from the world and was determined to pursue yoga, even though she had not initially planned for it to become her next calling.
Production on “Return of the Jewel Thief” eventually stalled after the film ran out of money, according to Anu. She said three months passed without shooting before she eventually left the project, having informed the makers in advance that she would have to move on.
By then, the song and an important scene featuring Dev Anand had already been filmed.
For Anu, the unfinished project marked the closing of one chapter in her film career, which had taken her to Cannes, while also coinciding with the beginning of a new phase of her life.
“Return of the Jewel Thief” was directed by Ashok Tyagi and was conceived as a sequel to the 1967 classic “Jewel Thief”. The 1996 crime-action thriller featured Dev Anand and Ashok Kumar in their respective roles, alongside Dharmendra, Jackie Shroff, Shilpa Shirodkar, Anu Aggarwal and Madhoo.
