A trainer aircraft operated by a private company crash-landed within the premises of Baramati airport in Pune district on Sunday afternoon, with no injuries or casualties reported, officials said.
The incident occurred at around 12:35 p.m., a short distance from the runway. The aircraft sustained minor damage in the crash-landing, while all occupants were reported safe.
The incident comes nearly seven months after a fatal aircraft crash near the same airport in which then Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and four others were killed.
Pawar was travelling on January 28 aboard a VSR Ventures-owned Learjet 45 along with his personal security officer, an attendant and two cockpit crew members. The aircraft, piloted by captain Sumit Kapur with first officer Shambhavi Pathak, crashed during its second attempt to land at Baramati airport.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) subsequently investigated the fatal crash. Its preliminary report said visibility at the time of the accident was below the required level.
The report also raised concerns about the condition of the Baramati airport runway, including fading runway markings and loose gravel on the surface. The AAIB recommended that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ensure compliance with prescribed safety standards at uncontrolled airfields.
The AAIB is expected to submit its final report on the Pawar aircraft crash by January next year. The report is expected to provide further findings on the circumstances and factors that contributed to the accident.
Sunday’s incident is the second trainer aircraft accident reported in the Baramati area this year. In May, another privately operated trainer aircraft crashed near the airstrip close to Gojubavi village.
The trainee pilot, who was the only person aboard that aircraft, escaped without serious injuries. According to details available at the time, part of the aircraft struck an electric pole shortly before landing.
