Punjab Police on Thursday clarified that there is no association between the Jantar Mantar protesters in New Delhi and the terror module recently busted by the force, alleging that selective editing of video clips and accompanying captions by certain social media handles have created a misleading impression.
A Punjab Police spokesperson said some social media accounts had uploaded edited excerpts of the press conference held by the Commissioner of Police, Amritsar, on August 4, 2026, in which details related to the busting of a Pakistan ISI-supported terror module were shared. The spokesperson said these edited extracts were being presented in a manner that incorrectly sought to link the module with the Jantar Mantar protests.
Clarifying the statement made during the press conference, the spokesperson said the Commissioner of Police, Amritsar had informed that some of the arrested persons had visited Jantar Mantar, carried out reconnaissance and allegedly planned to target protesters through petrol bombs.
However, no statement was made that the arrested individuals had participated in the protests or that the Jantar Mantar protesters had any connection with the terror module, the spokesperson added.
Punjab Police said that changes in background visuals, selective trimming of the video and accompanying captions or descriptions had resulted in an erroneous impression that the arrested persons were associated with the protests.
The spokesperson further clarified that while the audio and factual content of the original press conference had not been altered or manipulated, selective presentation of portions of the video along with captions attempted to convey an inference that was not expressly stated during the press conference.
Punjab Police said such selective editing had the potential to lead viewers to draw conclusions contrary to the actual context of the statement made by the Commissioner of Police, Amritsar.
The spokesperson added that appropriate legal action is being initiated in the matter under relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act.
