Veteran domestic cricketer Shreyas Gopal described his 100th First-Class appearance as a “surreal” moment after reaching the milestone during the Duleep Trophy final between South Zone and East Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.
Reflecting on the landmark occasion, Gopal called it one of the proudest moments of his career and said playing the Duleep Trophy final made the achievement even more special.
“It’s pretty surreal to play a 100th first-class game, and the Duleep Trophy final makes it even more special,” Gopal said in a video shared by BCCI Domestic on social media.
He recalled that as a child he had dreamed of representing his state but had never imagined reaching 100 First-Class matches.
“Growing up as a kid, you dream of playing a few games for your state, but you don’t really dream about playing your 100th, so that’s a special feeling,” he said.
Since making his First-Class debut in 2013, Gopal has experienced several highs and lows, describing the journey as one filled with both happy and difficult memories.
He began his career with Karnataka and played a key role in their 2013-14 Ranji Trophy triumph, taking 22 wickets during that season. He later moved to Kerala for the 2023-24 season before returning to Karnataka and helping the team win the Vijay Hazare Trophy in the 2024-25 season.
Gopal said surviving for a long period in First-Class cricket requires considerable discipline and perseverance, particularly on challenging Indian pitches.
“The biggest thing it’s taught me is discipline and perseverance, without which you won’t be able to play too many games,” he said.
The 100-game milestone, he added, belongs as much to those who supported him as it does to him.
“I want to dedicate it to my family, my parents and my wife, and definitely some of my very close friends, and the fans and people who have supported me right through my journey,” Gopal said.
