Zimbabwe have received a major boost ahead of their historic five-match T20I series against South Africa, with captain Josephine Nkomo declared fit and named to lead the 17-member squad announced by Zimbabwe Cricket on Thursday.
Nkomo missed Zimbabwe’s white-ball tour of Pakistan in May due to injury but has recovered and returns to captain the side. Veteran batter Sharne Mayers has also been recalled after a two-year absence. Mayers has represented Zimbabwe in 33 T20Is.
All-rounder Nyasha Gwanzura returns to the squad as experienced players Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano, Modester Mupachikwa, Loreen Tshuma and Loryn Phiri retain their places following their performances in the Pakistan series.
The squad also features three players from Zimbabwe’s ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier Division 1 campaign in Dar es Salaam last week. Captain Lorraine Pemhiwa, Beloved Biza and Christina Mutasa have earned opportunities at the senior level.
The series will mark the first assignment for Mark Coles as Zimbabwe’s women’s head coach following his appointment earlier this week. The experienced New Zealand coach has previously served as head coach of the Pakistan and Scotland women’s national teams.
Zimbabwe will return to home action for the first time since hosting the UAE in a bilateral series at Queens Sports Club in September and October 2025.
The opening T20I will be played on Friday, September 11, at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. The remaining matches are scheduled for September 13, 15, 17 and 19 at the same venue.
