YSR Congress Party president and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the TDP-led government following a horrific chainsaw assault on a Class 10 girl student inside a school in Raptadu, describing the incident as a “total collapse of law and order”.
The student suffered critical injuries to her face, head, neck and abdomen after a man allegedly attacked her with a chainsaw inside the school premises. Her right hand was reportedly almost severed in the assault.
Another girl student was also seriously injured when she attempted to intervene and save the victim. Both students are undergoing emergency treatment at a private hospital and are battling for their lives, officials said.
Reacting to the incident in a post on X, Jagan questioned how an attacker could enter a government school and carry out such a brutal assault inside a classroom.
He described the situation under the TDP coalition government as “Jungle Raj” and accused the administration of failing to ensure the safety of children even within educational institutions.
Jagan also criticised what he termed the government’s focus on political vendetta and “Red Book” rule, alleging that criminals were operating without fear of the law.
Demanding immediate action, the former Chief Minister called for the best possible emergency treatment for both injured students, immediate arrest of the attacker and a transparent investigation.
He further demanded an urgent review of school safety arrangements across Andhra Pradesh and accountability from Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and TDP National Working President Nara Lokesh.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock over the attack and spoke to officials to obtain details about the victim’s condition and medical treatment.
Naidu directed the medical team to accord the girl the highest priority and ensure the best possible treatment. He also ordered the police to launch an intensive search for the attacker and ensure that the accused faced stringent legal action.
The Chief Minister subsequently spoke to the victim’s mother over the phone, offering reassurance and assuring her of complete government support. He said every possible effort would be made to save her daughter’s life.
Naidu also sought updates on the condition of the second injured student.
Nara Lokesh separately condemned the attack.
Police have launched an extensive investigation and are examining whether the accused was known to the victim. Investigators are looking into different aspects of the incident while efforts continue to identify and apprehend the attacker.
