Indian boxer Parveen Hooda clinched gold in the women’s 65kg category at the 2026 Asian Games, defeating Chinese Taipei’s Nien-chin Che in a closely contested final on Friday to secure India’s second gold medal in women’s boxing at the ongoing event.
The 26-year-old from Rohtak began strongly, winning the opening round by a unanimous 5-0 decision. Che fought back in the second round, also taking it 5-0, leaving the contest to be decided in the final round.
Parveen maintained her composure under pressure and edged the decisive round 3-2 to seal the gold medal.
The victory marked a significant milestone in Parveen’s career, adding an Asian Games title to her previous achievements, which include gold at the 2025 World Cup, bronze at the 2022 World Championships and gold at the 2022 Asian Championships.
Parveen’s triumph came after Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain had earlier secured gold in the women’s 75kg category, giving India a double gold-medal finish in women’s boxing on the day.
Lovlina, who turned 29 on Friday, defeated China’s Ziyi Bao by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the 75kg final. The victory marked a significant improvement on the silver medal she won at the previous edition of the Asian Games and gave her a memorable birthday celebration.
The Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist became the second Indian woman after legendary boxer MC Mary Kom to win an Asian Games gold medal and an Olympic medal.
Mary Kom had won gold in the women’s 51kg category at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon and secured a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
With Parveen’s victory, she became the third Indian woman to win an Asian Games boxing gold, following Mary Kom and Lovlina. The two Indian boxers’ triumphs on Friday also marked a historic double for the country in women’s boxing at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
