Former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has apologized for the alleged derogatory remarks he made against women during his election campaign recently.
It is noteworthy that while addressing an election rally in support of Congress candidate Amrita Warring from Gidderbaha, the former Chief Minister cracked a joke that was criticized as being derogatory and objectionable.
Opposition parties and certain social groups slammed Channi for his alleged anti-women utterance.
Taking note of Channi’s remarks, Punjab State Women Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill issued a notice and summoned the former Chief Minister. He was supposed to appear before the Commission today but he did not appear. However, talking to reporters, Channi offered an apology for his remarks.
Channi said that he was always a humble man and his father taught him to walk low. He said, if anyone has been hurt by his words, he seeks an apology with folded hands.
Channi said that women voters favored him with votes and people from all walks of life always vote for him, so he cannot even think of insulting anyone.
The Congress leader said that he had not made any deliberate comment against anyone but had cracked a joke he had heard.
He said that the Chairperson of the Women’s Commission had given him a notice earlier too. He said, he is not against anyone but still apologizes to whoever he has hurt, with his hands folded and head bowed.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Women’s Commission, Raj Lali Gill, said that a second notice will again be issued to the former Chief Minister.
