The Karnataka Congress has launched a poster campaign targeting BJP state president and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra, branding him an “RTGS thief” and demanding an apology over his alleged derogatory remarks against Congress leaders.
Posters carrying slogans such as “Vijayendra RTGS Villain”, “Coward” and “RTGS Thief” have appeared near the Bengaluru residences of Vijayendra and his father, former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa.
The campaign follows Vijayendra’s speech at a public meeting in Davanagere on October 31, during which he criticised the Congress government over reservation-related issues and its handling of the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) case.
Taking objection to his choice of words, Congress workers accused the BJP leader of using inappropriate language against the party’s leadership. His remarks also triggered protests by Congress activists in different parts of the state.
Responding to the controversy on Tuesday, Vijayendra expressed regret and apologised if his words had hurt anyone.
“I generally do not use such language at public platforms or on any occasion. If my choice of words has hurt anyone, I sincerely apologise. I had no intention of hurting anyone deliberately,” he said.
However, he maintained his criticism of the Congress government, alleging that it had failed to take adequate steps to reform the KPSC and had not presented its case effectively before the Karnataka High Court.
Explaining his remarks, Vijayendra said he had used certain words because he believed the government had not argued the case properly. He reiterated his apology to anyone who had been offended.
The poster campaign has added another flashpoint to the political confrontation between the ruling Congress and the BJP in Karnataka, with Vijayendra’s apology failing to prevent the controversy from escalating.
