A 25-year-old remand prisoner, who escaped from police custody twice within 24 hours before being arrested in the Sathyamangalam forest area of Erode district, was questioned by Coimbatore police for the second consecutive day on Tuesday.
The accused, Raghavan, alias Kozikaran, is being interrogated by Racecourse police to establish how he evaded security and reached the forest after escaping from Coimbatore Central Prison. Investigators are also examining whether anyone assisted him. His statement has been recorded.
Raghavan was arrested during a night operation after a special police team traced his hideout using drone surveillance. Six teams had been formed to search for him across Erode, the Nilgiris and neighbouring Karnataka and Kerala.
A resident of the Sri Lankan Tamil Rehabilitation Centre at Bhavanisagar in Erode district, Raghavan faces several criminal cases, including robbery and theft. He has a history of escaping custody. In June 2026, he reportedly escaped while being transported to Bengaluru.
Police arrested him on October 30, but he escaped from Annur police station the same evening. Officers pursued and apprehended him. Later that night, while being escorted to Coimbatore Central Prison for remand, he allegedly assaulted the accompanying personnel and escaped again.
Four police personnel, including a sub-inspector, were suspended for alleged negligence, and a separate case was registered over the escape.
Investigators are probing how Raghavan repeatedly evaded custody. Police are expected to produce him before the jurisdictional court after questioning and arrange enhanced security for his detention.
