Newly crowned Formula One world champion Kimi Antonelli has confirmed that he will retain the No. 12 on his car for the 2027 season instead of switching to the coveted No. 1 reserved for the reigning champion.
The 20-year-old Italian made history by becoming the youngest-ever Formula One world champion after finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday. His result gave him an unassailable lead in the championship with four rounds still remaining.
Since 2014, drivers have been allowed to choose their race numbers, with the reigning champion having the option of using No. 1. However, Antonelli said he intends to stick with No. 12, a number that holds personal significance for him and was also used by his idol Ayrton Senna when the Brazilian won his first world title in 1988.
“I think I’ll stay with number 12,” Antonelli said, explaining that the number was special to him and would help him remain grounded and approach the next season with a fresh mindset.
He also admitted to being superstitious, saying No. 1 had never brought him good results whenever he had used it.
The decision means Antonelli will not follow the recent example of Lando Norris, who used No. 1 as defending champion in 2026. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen also carried the number from 2022 to 2025.
Antonelli’s title is Italy’s first in Formula One in 73 years. He has recorded nine race victories and 16 podium finishes in 19 races this season.
In a post-race statement released by Mercedes, Antonelli described becoming world champion as an achievement he would remember for the rest of his life. He credited the team’s consistent performance, its faith in him and the support of his family, friends and partners for helping him reach the milestone.
