The BJP has warned Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chairman and Nowda MLA Humayun Kabir against blocking National Highway 12 on December 6, the day construction of a proposed Babri Masjid is scheduled to begin in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district.
Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar cautioned Kabir that disrupting traffic on a national highway could invite legal consequences. He also questioned the decision to associate the proposed mosque with Mughal ruler Babur.
“Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, blocking a national highway is an offence under a non-bailable section. I would urge the MLA not to indulge in such activities,” Majumdar said, warning Kabir against going ahead with the proposed blockade.
State Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh also criticised the AJUP chief, describing him as politically irrelevant.
The BJP leaders reacted a day after Kabir announced plans to block NH-12 on December 6, coinciding with the proposed start of mosque construction at Beldanga in Murshidabad district.
Kabir has said the approximately 30-km stretch between Rejinagar and Berhampore would remain under his supporters’ control. He also announced plans for demonstrations across several other areas, including Krishnanagar, Domkal, Jalangi, Sainthia, Kandi, Burdwan and Nabadwip.
The MLA had earlier challenged the administration and police to demonstrate their ability to prevent the proposed blockade.
Kabir, a former Trinamool Congress leader, was expelled from the party last year. He subsequently returned to the political spotlight by raising the Babri Masjid issue and later formed the Aam Janata Unnayan Party.
He announced plans to build the mosque in his home constituency of Beldanga on December 6, the anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in 1992.
