The Punjab Government has approved the establishment of a new grain market on 217 kanal and 14 marla (more than 27 acres) of government land at Khandebad village, adjoining Lehragaga, to ease traffic congestion and provide better facilities to farmers, traders and arhtiyas.
Punjab Water Resources Minister and Lehragaga MLA Barinder Kumar Goyal announced the decision while addressing a press conference at Punjab Bhawan on Monday. He said the proposal was approved by the Punjab Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, at its meeting held on October 31.
Goyal said the existing grain market in Lehragaga had become inadequate to handle the increasing arrival of agricultural produce, particularly paddy and wheat, due to a substantial rise in crop production over the years.
He pointed out that the existing market was established around 45 years ago on approximately 12 acres. A cotton yard was subsequently developed within the same premises. With the growing volume of agricultural produce, the available space had become insufficient to accommodate increasing procurement and trading activities.
The Minister said the existing grain market was located in the heart of Lehragaga city, leading to persistent traffic congestion during the procurement season. Farmers, traders and arhtiyas had been demanding a new market to address these difficulties and improve facilities for agricultural operations.
Responding to the long-standing demand, the Punjab Government has approved the development of the new market on its 217 kanal and 14 marla land at Khandebad village, adjacent to Lehragaga. Goyal added that access to the proposed market would be provided through land at Lehal Khurd village.
He said the new facility would provide much-needed relief to farmers, traders and arhtiyas while reducing traffic congestion in Lehragaga. It would also cater to the growing requirements of the agricultural trading community across the region.
Goyal expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and the entire Cabinet for approving the proposal, saying the decision would fulfil a long-pending demand of local residents and facilitate smoother agricultural marketing operations.
