Mumbai, November 2, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Actress Dia Mirza has responded to the controversy surrounding the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) pollution-awareness video featuring her, reiterating that air pollution is a public health concern and that efforts to reduce it are important for the environment.

The civic body had removed the video from its social media accounts after Mumbai BJP chief Ameet Satam objected to the actress’s participation in its Diwali awareness campaign.

In a statement, the ‘Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein’ actress said the video was intended to encourage people to celebrate the festival in a healthier and more mindful manner.

“Diwali celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. The video was recorded in the interest of public awareness, with the intention of encouraging a healthier and more mindful celebration. Air pollution is a matter of public health, and every effort towards reducing it is a step towards a better environment for all,” she said.

The BMC campaign featured messages from several prominent personalities, including Dia, Madhuri Dixit and cricketer Ajinkya Rahane, urging people to consider the environmental impact of their celebrations.

Satam questioned Dia’s involvement, arguing that people did not need lessons on celebrating Diwali from her. In a post on X, he wrote, “We don’t need lessons on how to celebrate Diwali from Dia Mirza. Our traditions are deeply rooted in our culture.”

The removal of the video prompted reactions from political leaders, including Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, who said the issue should not be linked to any particular religion.

Speaking to IANS, Athawale emphasised that the Constitution guarantees people the right to celebrate their respective festivals. He also said that while bursting firecrackers was considered significant to Diwali celebrations, concerns about excessive pollution could not be ignored.
