Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan once offered an insight into his unconventional approach to dancing, revealing that he preferred spontaneous performances over rehearsed choreography.
On the occasion of the actor’s 61st birthday, Prasar Bharati Archives shared a throwback video in which Shah Rukh spoke about his understanding of dance and explained why he avoided rehearsing his moves on the dance floor.
“I believe in a lot of naturalism. So, that is why I don’t even rehearse on the dance floor,” the actor said in the archival clip.
Explaining his approach on film sets, Shah Rukh said he preferred to respond to the situation in front of him and incorporate his character into the performance rather than follow a rehearsed routine.
“I come on the set, whatever is happening, I have to do it here. And, I keep adding my character to it,” he said.
The Jawan actor also described dance as an instinctive expression of enjoyment, saying music should make a person want to move, irrespective of which part of the body is involved.
“My definition of dance is… dance is what makes you move, makes you enjoy. Dance is when you listen to music and your heart wants you to start moving,” he said, adding that movement could involve the legs, nose, ears or eyes.
Despite his preference for spontaneity, Shah Rukh has delivered several iconic dance performances during his career. His popular numbers include Chaiyya Chaiyya from Dil Se (1998), Dard-e-Disco from Om Shanti Om (2007), Chammak Challo from RA.One (2011) and Lungi Dance from Chennai Express (2013).
The throwback video offers fans a glimpse into the thinking behind the actor’s distinctive on-screen dancing style.
