Two Class 10 students are battling for their lives after a man allegedly attacked them with a chainsaw inside their school premises in Raptadu, in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur district, officials said.
One of the girls sustained severe injuries to her face, head and throat and is undergoing emergency medical treatment. She also suffered deep wounds to her neck and abdomen, while her right hand was reportedly almost severed in the attack.
The second student was seriously injured when she attempted to intervene and save her classmate. Both girls are currently receiving treatment at a private hospital.
“The child was immediately rushed to the hospital for critical care, while law enforcement authorities have launched an active manhunt to track down and apprehend the assailant,” officials said.
Police have initiated an extensive investigation and are yet to establish whether the accused was known to the girl before the attack. Investigators are examining various aspects of the case as efforts continue to identify and apprehend the attacker.
The assault triggered panic across the school premises, with students and teachers scrambling for safety. After the attacker fled, teachers alerted the police and called an ambulance. The two injured girls were subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
The incident has raised serious concerns among parents and family members of the victims over the school’s security arrangements.
They questioned how a man carrying a chainsaw could enter the school, gain access to the building and reach a classroom without being detected or stopped by security personnel or school staff.
Meanwhile, another horrific incident has shocked people across the country, with a six-year-old student allegedly being brutally assaulted by a Class 3 student at a government school in Haryana’s Panchkula, officials said on Saturday.
The incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed in the classroom where the assault took place. The footage later went viral, triggering concerns over the school’s security arrangements.
