Two foreign nationals died following suspected electrocution at the swimming pool of a five-star hotel in Bengaluru, while two others, including an American tourist, were injured when they attempted to rescue them, police said on Saturday.
The incident occurred around 6.30 p.m. on Friday at the hotel’s swimming pool on the third floor in the Halasuru area.
The deceased have been identified as Alexander Maximilian Theiss, 57, a German national, and Juraj Horvath, 45, from Slovakia.
According to police sources, the two men suffered fatal electric shocks after the pool water allegedly became electrified due to a suspected fault in the electrical system. The precise cause of the incident is being investigated.
American tourist Mathew DeSantis, 41, and hotel lifeguard Rahul Tiwari, 28, were injured while trying to pull the two men out of the water. Both were taken to Manipal Hospital, where they were reported to be in stable condition.
Police have registered a negligence case against the hotel management following a complaint by Horvath’s wife.
Preliminary inspections by officials of the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) have pointed to a possible fault in the earthing system or electrical installations connected to the swimming pool.
Investigators are examining the pool’s electrical infrastructure, the hotel’s maintenance procedures and the safety measures in place to establish how the water may have become electrically charged.
Police are also collecting details about the sequence of events and the rescue attempt to determine responsibility for the two deaths. Further investigation is underway.
