Senior Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge, paid floral tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at Shakti Sthal in New Delhi on Saturday, marking her death anniversary.

Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Kharge and party general secretary K.C. Venugopal were among those who visited the memorial to honour the former Prime Minister.

In a message posted on X, the Congress described Indira Gandhi as a “symbol of indomitable courage and willpower” and offered its tribute on the anniversary of her assassination.

The party said it remembered her courage, leadership and commitment to India’s unity, integrity and progress.

Indira Gandhi, India’s first woman Prime Minister, was born on November 19, 1917, in Allahabad, now Prayagraj. She was the daughter of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Kamala Nehru.

She served as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and returned to office in 1980, remaining in the post until her assassination on October 31, 1984.

Her tenure included the 1971 India-Pakistan war, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. Her political legacy remains closely associated with major developments in India’s political, economic and foreign-policy history.

The Congress also observes National Integration Day on November 19, Gandhi’s birth anniversary. The party instituted the observance in 1985 to highlight her contribution to national unity and the importance of India’s pluralism and diversity.
